What is your background (or what are you studying?) 

I graduated in Communication Sciences, specializing in Advertising and Public Relations, from the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (Lima-Peru). Likewise, I finished my undergraduate studies in Education with a specialty in English, at the Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal (Lima-Peru). I also carried out postgraduate studies in Public Administration at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima-Peru). 

Why did you choose this university and course? 

I chose California State University, since it is an American university with more than 150 years and a very good reputation in hosting international students. Northridge campus has a very good location, and I knew that art is often breathed on campus, since it has been the place of various film productions. 

I took the Communication, Design and Innovation course because it would reinforce my career knowledge from a marketing-focused perspective. I liked the syllabus of the course, since it included topics such as integrated marketing communications, communication design and trends in business communication. In addition, our teachers would have a good academic and professional background, we would have visits to companies and conferences, and we would take Business English classes. 

How was the process of preparing for the trip with IBS Americas? What support have you received from the team? 

The preparation process for the trip with IBS Americas was efficient, even in the special circumstances in which we found ourselves due to the health pandemic. 

From the application to the scholarship, the team guided me and answered the messages in a short time. All the necessary material was available on the Student Portal, and we have had two orientation sessions prior to the trip, which allowed us to clear up doubts first-hand, and to meet our future classmates. 

Furthermore, the team was monitoring that we comply with the delivery of the necessary documents, and it was constantly informing us about the measures that we had to adjust to in order to travel. 

It was very valuable that the IBS Americas team was able to make the trip possible and gave us the necessary guidelines for the international program, despite the special circumstances in which we found ourselves worldwide. 

How was your preparation to leave your country after almost 2 years of closed borders worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic? 

I have always had the intrinsic motivation to study in person abroad. And, as soon as I had the chance to do it, I didn’t hesitate to take it. I had already kept the scholarship for a period that anticipates the pandemic. Therefore, I knew that, despite the uncertainty, it was time to take the course in which I enrolled. And, fortunately, I had the support of my work center and my family, as long as I respect the health measures. Among them, do COVID-19 tests periodically and purchase the appropriate medical insurance. 

During my preparation, I checked some of the readings that CSUN provided us to familiarize ourselves with the topics that we would see in class. Likewise, my future roommates and I met virtually to develop an itinerary that included academic and tourist activities, expenses and other details. 

I must confess that I was a little scared, since the situation in the state I was going to travel to was not the best. However, we cannot live in fear and, by taking the necessary precautions, we can adapt to a new reality. 

How was the experience of studying with people of different nationalities and cultures? From which countries were the students you met? 

I met colleagues mainly from Brazil, El Salvador, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Peru, who traveled basically with the same purpose I traveled with. The experience was enriching due to the diversity of people with whom I did networking. In fact, I became friends with some of them, with whom we video call to this day. 

I learned from both: their cultures and their professional experiences. It was interesting to know how certain problems are dealt with in different contexts, and how art, communication and leadership was the common language between several different people in the overall program. I actually miss the routines, walks, jokes, jargon and bonds that we built during that period. It was all part of the adventure. 

What companies did you visit? How was the experience to get in touch with executives from these companies? 

We had three lectures with the following guest speakers: Lillian Sherman, Executive Director at Pike Place Market Foundation; Alex Malfinati, CFO of Azul Airlines; and Kimberly Hicks, Chief Product Officer at Great Minds, who is also former VP at The Walt Disney Company. 

We had a question-and-answer moment with the three of them. It was enriching to learn not only how they have achieved success in their different professions, but also how they have overcome obstacles throughout their careers. It was valuable to receive their advices about team leadership, having a purpose and defending it regardless of our position. 

From Lillian Sherman I learned that we must have our business model clear at all times. And from Kimberly Hicks I reinforced the idea that we can always renew our ways of delivering a service, adjusting to trends and without losing the essence of our business. 

What did you think of the university’s structure, staff and support during classes? 

I think the activities were well scheduled and gave us time to enjoy the campus infrastructure, which is beautiful. I liked the level of demand by being constantly evaluated through our participation and review of the progress of the assigned project. The Business English classes were a plus. 

I felt welcome from the first orientation on campus to the last day. The spirit of service was in the university’s staff with whom I interacted. I appreciate the predisposition of Vanessa Andrade, Boris Polotzek and Jessica Isomoto, whom we saw daily near the classrooms, and who provided us with announcements in person and reminders via e-mail. 

Additionally, we had access to COVID-19 screening tests on campus. And initiatives like the Graduation Ceremony and the Hashtag contest made the experience more memorable. 

About your routine, how did you organize yourself to study and enjoy your free time? What did you do in those moments? What places did you visit? 

The routine my roommates and I established was effective and fun. We were three girls in the same course, and it was not difficult to get along with each other because we had a clear goal: to do our best in class, and to enjoy tourism in California. To do this, we established an itinerary that we adjusted along the way. Also, we helped each other where we could: meals, shopping, laundry, etc. 

After classes, we used to eat something, go home in the car we rented, chat a little in the living room of our apartment and, around seven at night, it was time to do homework. At study time, we split up to virtually discuss with our groups what we couldn’t finish in person.  

My free time was well spent. I visited Warner Bros Studios, Universal Studios Hollywood, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Griffith Observatory, Madame Tussauds, Crypto Arena, Lake Hollywood Park, Walk of Fame, Downtown Santa Monica, Pinon Hills, Valyermo, Hollywood and Highland, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Rodeo Drive, West Hollywood Sunset Strip, among others.  

How important is this international experience in your life and career? 

I grew academically and humanistically. I reinforced what I knew and I learned more thanks to the simulation on how to build an enterprise from scratch: since the creation of a brand until the transformation of the service into an experience. Likewise, I solidified my oral skills focused on business environment. 

This period was interesting to learn about other cultures, languages, ways of thinking and communicating. But also, to get to know myself a little better. I really enjoyed interacting inside and outside the classroom with people from other countries, who have become my friends, whose achievements I enjoy to this day. Overall, I am grateful for this experience.  

Finally, what message would you like to leave for students who are planning to take a course abroad? 

If your philosophy is to invest in your career and you are looking forward to have an international experience at a top university, this is the way. You can find a program of your interest and take it in the period that best suits you. It will definitely be an adventure. My recommendation is that you always have a clear goal, and put together a team with people who share that objective.

Despite the fact that this behavior may not be accepted by some leaders, who may feel threatened by such a decentralized form of leadership, the autonomous model has been gaining popularity among companies since autonomy and freedom create spaces for each professional to deliver their best, thereby incorporating a higher level of creativity and innovation into business activities.

3 – Create a culture of humanized feedback

While feedback is typically a well-established rite within organizations, it is essential that leaders refrain from waiting for these moments to arise to inform their team of the areas in which they doing well and where they need to improve.

However, the importance of feedback focused on the development of skills and competencies rather than its use as a tool for control and criticism is becoming increasingly appreciated on the market.

The frequency of feedback depends on each group and the pace at which deliveries are expected from the different areas of an organization; however, it is recommended that team members are generally provided with feedback more than once a month.

Some companies have even adopted check-ins and check-outs at the beginning and end of the week, respectively, in order to quickly identify potential areas of improvement and continuously optimize the performance of each team member.

4 – Develop more diverse teams

Until recently, determining leadership types was a less complex task. A person’s innate characteristics was considered to dictate their leadership style.

1 – Autocratic Leadership 

Autocratic leadership is a perfectly expression of the type of leader with which we are most familiar. In this model, decisions center upon the leader — who can be thought of as “the boss” — who in turn delegates tasks among the members of their team in a descending manner. 

Due to the fact that it is a more authoritarian leadership model in which there is little room for dialogue, autocratic leadership has become less prominent in corporate environments as professionals develop and enter the labor market better prepared to express their ideas and contribute to the decision-making process. 

2 – Democratic Leadership 

Taking into account the fact that poor leadership is the main cause of job dissatisfaction for more than 40% of professionals, the democratic leader has been gaining space in companies as a means of including team in decisions and reaping the benefits of a horizontal model. 

Under this type of leadership, dialogue becomes a two-way street, opening space for leaders and subordinates to obtain solutions together, combining their experiences and complementary visions together to achieve the desired results. 

When compared to autocratic leadership, democratic leadership provides benefits to everyone involved: on one hand, the company is able to rely on a more coherent decision-making process that is  focused on the common good, while employees tend to feel more valued and are more productive and proactive during their daily activities due to the fact that they are able to understand the importance of their role in achieving results. 

3 – Liberal Leadership 

Liberal Leadership is common in startups and in companies for which the size of the board is reduced and leaders are responsible for more than one area, for example. Under a liberal leadership model, each team member is provided with a higher level of autonomy and more freedom to act. 

This is due to the fact that the liberal leader tends to act only when requested, delegating the process of organization, planning and execution to members of their team. This behavior is known as the hands off, or non-interventionist, approach. 

Under this type of leadership, the leader’s main challenge is to form a team made up of highly qualified professionals that are capable of taking responsibility for results, thereby transforming the leader’s role into something more akin to a counselor. 

4 – Coaching Leadership  

Coaching leadership takes it names from the fact that, under this leadership model, the manager appropriates coaching tools in order to develop their team. 

The leader is therefore responsible for supporting their employees throughout their interpersonal development process, which includes their thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Normally, the relationship between the leader and their team is based on trust and thoughtful interactions.

  • The impact of the respective issue on the business’s final results; 
  • The external market scenario. 

Due to its inherently flexible nature, situational leadership has been proven to be a very promising approach in many companies since it allows leaders to adapt their behavior and direct the team in the manner that best suits each specific situation.

4 impacts of the War in Ukraine on the Global Economy

Started in February 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has plagued the eastern part of the country. In addition to the complete humanitarian disaster, the impacts on the world economy are already visible.

According to World Bank President David Malpass, “the war in Ukraine is a worldwide catastrophe that will cut global economic growth.”

In this article, we will look at 4 of the main impacts of the war in Ukraine on the Global Economy. Follow along and understand!

1 – Possible energy crisis

Russia is the third largest oil producer in the world, behind only the United States and Saudi Arabia. This means that much of Europe is supplied by the barrels coming from there, as is the case with gas as well.

With the United States and European Union sanctions against Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s constant threats about a possible cut in the European Union’s oil and gas supply system, world leaders have been preparing for a possible energy crisis. Germany, for example, imports more than half its gas from Russia, and would go into a recession if natural gas deliveries were cut off.

In addition, oil barrel prices are also constantly rising, with an increase of more than 60% over the course of 2022: another worrying factor that further accelerates global inflation.

2 – High food prices

Besides gas and oil, Russia is also one of the main producers of grains and fertilizers, which directly impacts the price of foods of plant and animal origin.

This scenario brings even more input for skyrocketing inflation, bringing more and more indications that a worldwide recession is looming, as the countries’ economies have already been weakened by the impact of Covid-19 in the previous years.

3 – Increasing country debts

As with any aspect of the economy, the effect of an isolated phenomenon has consequences for an entire value chain.

An example of this is what has been happening in the global economy after the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine: as prices for basic items such as gas, energy, and food skyrocketed, countries were forced to raise their interest rates in order to contain inflation.

This has generated another impact on the countries’ cash flow: the increase of their internal and external debts, a factor that can raise the risks of the crisis and make the lives of thousands of people even more difficult.

4 – Growth of social inequality

Faced with so many uncertainties and direct impacts on the world economy, institutions such as the UN have already expressed their concern with the increase in social inequality, making it even harder for vulnerable populations to grow, especially in developed countries.

Furthermore, the rate of people living below the poverty line is constantly rising around the world: according to data from the UNDP – United Nations Development Program – the world already has more than 1.3 billion people living below the poverty line.


As we have seen throughout the text, the impacts on the world economy from the Ukraine war could snowball if they are not contained quickly. This is further exacerbated by the previous weakness of the countries’ economies due to Covid-19.

While other nations continue to exert diplomatic and economic pressure to put an end to the Russian invasion, company managers from different sectors are trying to adjust their strategies to the current context. The organizations that have leaders with a global vision tend to make a more relevant contribution to the resumption of economic development, which is essential to overcome the difficulties imposed by the war.

What is your background (or what are you studying?)

I have a degree in political science from the University of Buenos Aires. I have a Diploma in Environmental Activism and Policy and I also completed a program in International Politics. This year I will begin graduate studies. I will pursue a specialization in political studies.

Why did you choose this university and course?

I chose the university because I felt it had a strong commitment to academics and professionalism, but also to inclusion and diversity. That particularly caught my attention and I wanted to approach the university policies that spearhead the position of the university. On the other hand, the business strategy and international marketing course was a novelty in my choice since I was originally going to take the course on contemporary topics in public administration. However, the course chosen in the second instance was extremely enriching and allowed me to come across a series of theoretical and practical concepts that will be valuable in every personal and professional instance I encounter.

How was the process of preparing for the trip with IBS Americas? What support have you received from the team?

During the preparation process, I am extremely grateful to have received assistance in every instance I needed it. Although the process took longer than imagined due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the upcoming circumstances and the accompaniment of the IBS Americas team ensured that the preparation had every instance in advance.

How was your preparation to leave your country after almost 2 years of closed borders worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic? 

My pre-trip preparation was extremely cautious. I tried to avoid any exposure to the virus and working remotely allowed me to stay at home for as long as possible. However, it was also necessary to have certain activities in order to find a balance. In that respect, I must say that the foray back into English speech grammar was a leisure but also an academic one, so that I was able to find it an enjoyable time during the pandemic. This included reading, series, movies, and podcasts in English that helped me to polish my English and also to distract me from everyday life.

How was the experience of studying with people of different nationalities and cultures? From which countries were the students you met?

Having the possibility of studying with people from different countries is a great instance of cultural exchange. This is possible thanks to the diversity in the ways of studying, in the perspectives on what they have seen and in the way they share what they have learned. Thanks to the fact that I had the possibility to do it before, it was not the first time, but it was very gratifying to share studies with people from other countries, with a different educational, cultural and personal background.

What companies did you visit? How was the experience to get in touch with executives from these companies?

Unfortunately, Covid-19 prevented him from carrying out the activities scheduled by IBS Americas and the University. I was sorry, but at least I was able to be part of the virtual tour of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It was an amazing experience and a new talk for my knowledge.

What did you think of the university’s structure, staff, and support during classes?

As far as the structure of the university is concerned, I was really very comfortable and delighted with the layout of the buildings surrounded by nature, the interweaving of modern buildings and buildings of yesteryear, preserved in a praiseworthy manner. I really enjoyed walking through each of the spaces and found it very interesting to discover such resources available to the students.

About your routine, how did you organize yourself to study and enjoy your free time? What did you do in those moments? What places did you visit?

Regarding the organization to follow the course study, I was able to organize myself to be able to dedicate time to the material seen during the class, as well as to the tasks given to us by the professors. When the days without classes arrived, I tried to take advantage of the time to go for a walk from early in the morning. The places I had the opportunity to visit were Downtown L.A., Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica, The Warner Bros Studios, The Walk of Fame, among others. I was fascinated with each of the places, and I would visit them again, as well as others that I had left pending, such as The Walt Disney Concert Hall, Universal Studios, Las Vegas, among others.

How important is this international experience in your life and career?

I believe that the experience provided me with a new perspective on my personal, academic and professional life. This is due to the magnificent way in which the professors delivered the concepts. In the same way, introducing me to a completely different society, even if it was for a short period of time, also meant a completely different reading from the one that works in my country, so it is also a factor that I take into account, and it gives me several reflections on the subject.

Finally, what message would you like to leave for students who are planning to take a course abroad?

At the time of leaving a message for those who decide to study in another country, my experience allows me to advise them not to hesitate to do so, to go through the lens of our reality, of our perspective and enter a different nation, with a group of people looking to expand the horizon of learning and enrichment. I believe that it is entirely worthwhile to have this project within the academic and professional orbit, and at the same time it should be an incentive from the different houses of studies.
